For Immediate Release

June 12, 2003

Naval adventure and romance are the focus of a free summer film series at the Clark Art Institute. Beginning June 20, the series "Britannia Rules the Waves" will be offered every Friday at 4 p.m. (with double features on June 27 and July 5 running at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m).  All films are shown free of charge in the Clark auditorium.

The swashbuckling 1940 classic The Sea Hawk, starring Errol Flynn and Claude Rains, will kick off the series on June 20. Flynn portrays an English privateer who conspires with Queen Elizabeth to defeat the Spanish Armada.

Other films celebrating the bond between Britain and the sea will be: Longitude (2000, 200 minutes) on June 27 (Part 1 at 2 p.m., Part 2 at 4 p.m.); Treasure Island (1950, 96 minutes) on July 4; Mutiny on the Bounty (1935, 132 minutes) on July 11; The Bounty (1984, 130 minutes) on July 18; Horatio Hornblower (1999) on July 25 ("The Duel" at 2 p.m., "The Fire Ships" at 4 p.m., 100 minutes each).

In August, the series continues with Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951, 117 minutes) on August 1; Damn the Defiant (1962, 101 minutes) on August 8; Persuasion (1995, 104 minutes) on August 15; In Which We Serve (1943, 114 minutes) on August 22; and I Know Where I'm Going (1945, 92 minutes) on August 29.

The series will conclude on September 5 with a showing of Local Hero (1983, 112 minutes).

"Britannia Rules the Waves" is offered in connection with the exhibition Turner: The Late Seascapes, on view at the Clark through September 7. The Clark is the only North American venue to see the exhibition of 35 paintings and watercolors by Britain's greatest artist.
