Crow and Raven: Baskin, Hughes, Manet, Poe on View at the Clark
For Immediate Release
October 05, 2009
Poets and artists join forces for Crow and Raven: Baskin, Hughes, Manet, Poe on view at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. This focused exhibition explores the nature of artistic collaboration as seen in two landmark publications that bring text and image together in celebration of a common subject: crows and ravens. Crow and Raven is on view October 16, 2009 through January 10, 2010.
Both of these ambitious collaborations create a seamless unification of art and poetry using the disturbing and enigmatic crow and raven as protagonists. In 1875 poet Stéphane Mallarmé and painter Édouard Manet produced Le Corbeau, a translation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven. Featuring texts in both English and French, this rare edition includes five moody lithographs and an advertisement designed by Manet.
Nearly 100 years later, American artist Leonard Baskin teamed with English poet Ted Hughes on Crow: From the Life and Songs of the Crow (1973), a limited-edition book combining poems and illustrations. The exhibition includes the complete set of Baskin’s twelve original drawings for Crow, on loan from Lisa Unger Baskin. Never before seen in public, these powerful drawings are the product of a long partnership between the artist and author.
The Clark’s collection of prints, drawings, and photographs numbers over 5,000 and spans the history of the graphic arts from the fifteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. Works on paper may be viewed by appointment in the department’s study room. To arrange a visit, call 413-458-2303, extension 360.
