Williamstown, MA—On Tuesday, August 14, at 8 pm, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s popular chamber music concert series continues with the Carpe Diem String Quartet. The Clark’s intimate auditorium with its soaring acoustics is one of the best performance venues in the region. Concert tickets are $25 ($20 for Clark members and students) and may be purchased online at clarkart.edu or by calling 413 458 0524. The galleries will remain open until 6 pm.

A delicious three-course fixed-price dinner is available prior to each 8 pm chamber music concert, served in the Clark’s café at 6 pm. Dinners are $27 per person (does not include beverage, tax, or gratuity); space is limited and reservations are required. For reservations, call 413 458 0524.

One of the most versatile string quartets of its generation, Carpe Diem has captured the imagination of audiences and critics alike and has earned critical acclaim with innovative programming and electrifying performances. Their musical passion has led them down the paths of gypsy, tango, folk, pop, rock, and jazz-inspired music—and the group is equally at home with the traditional string quartet repertoire. “One would have to search long and hard to find a more charming and enjoyable chamber music concert than what we experienced with the Carpe Diem String Quartet … Carpe Diem is a seriously talented quartet in the most traditional definition” (The Sarasota Herald Tribune). The Carpe Diem String Quartet recently received a prestigious PNC ArtsAlive Award.

At the Clark, Carpe Diem will perform Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Opus 80 as their traditional work. In celebration of the Clark’s Unearthed exhibition, they will present Five Seasons by contemporary Chinese composer Lei Liang, who has been awarded both a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Aaron Copland Award. This work will include guest artist Yihan Chen, a prize-winning pipa player. The pipa, a Chinese musical instrument that is plucked rather than bowed, has been played since 200 BC and is still one of the most popular of Chinese musical instruments. Rounding out their program, the quartet will perform Fiddle Suite Montana by Korine Fujiwara, the quartet’s violist. This work is in a folk-bluegrass style, a fun departure from traditional quartet works.

The Clark’s chamber music series concludes with the Shanghai String Quartet on Tuesday, August 21.
