For Immediate Release
August 18, 2005
In celebration of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s expansion project, the fall film series “Architectural Dreams” will feature the lives of well-known architects and their projects. This free film series is held on Fridays at 4 pm in the Clark auditorium.
Opening the series on Friday, September 16 is Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, (1948, 93 minutes). This classic screwball comedy starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy is intended as a teaser for the film series. Not just a matter of bait-and-switch, this film offers a keynote to the series by focusing on the messy process of building, more that the finished products celebrated in the rest of the series.
Showing on Friday, September 23 is Frank Lloyd Wright, (1998, 153 minutes). The preeminent American architect gets the Ken Burns treatment in this Peabody Award-winning film biography that spans his full 90 years, from his prairie boyhood through apprenticeship to Louis Sullivan all the way to his final masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum.
Friday, September 30 will feature My Architect: A Son’s Journey, (2003, 116 minutes). In this film, Nathaniel Kahn goes on a personal quest in search of the father he hardly knew, the esteemed but eccentric architect Louis Kahn, through exploration of his buildings and interviews with those he worked with in places ranging from the Salk Institute to the capital of Bangladesh.
Films for the month of October will include First Person Singular and The Museum on the Mountain on October 7, Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision on October 14, and Concert of Wills: Making the Getty Center on October 21. Concluding the series on October 28 will be Making the Modern, a film documenting Tadao Ando’s design and construction of the Modern Art Museum in Forth Worth. Ando, a Pritzker Prize winner who is famous for his ability to weave architecture into a natural environment, is designing the Clark’s expansion project.
