The Clark is Open Monday, April 17 to Celebrate Patriot's Day

For Immediate Release

March 28, 2006

Open to the public on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 17, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is a perfect place to spend a morning, an afternoon, or the whole day with the family during school vacation week.  The galleries are open 10 am to 5 pm and admission is free.  The Clark is normally closed on Mondays September through June.

Make a day of it with gallery visits to the permanent collection and special exhibition, hikes up Stone Hill to enjoy the art in nature aspect of the Clark, and strolls on the expansive grounds.  Food is available for purchase at the courtyard cafe or bring lunches and take advantage of the picnic tables dotting the landscape.

Patriot's Day is one of your last opportunities to view Paper Trails: 100 Great Drawings, Prints, and Photographs from the Clark, an exciting exhibition of some of the best selections from the Clark's works on paper. This exhibition draws connections between such greats as Pablo Picasso and Albrecht Durer and finds links both visual and historical, in often seemingly disparate works.  This fun and unusual approach invites reflection on the nature of connectedness and invites viewers to find their own trails between the works.  Paper Trails spans over 500 years and includes works by Edgar Degas, Giorgio Morandi, Jean Eugene Auguste Atget, and Edvard Munch.  The exhibition closes April 30.

"Looking Carefully" cards engage children and parents alike with works in the permanent collection.  Pick up these free activity pieces at the admissions desk and discover new ways to look at art.

Don't forget the "Paper Trails Family Day," also during school vacation week, on Saturday, April 22 from noon to 4 pm.  Kite making, origami lessons, magic, and a family gallery talk are just a few of activities celebrating the Paper Trails exhibition.  All activities and admission to the galleries are free on this day.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August), and open on Patriot's Day, Monday, April 17 from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free November through May.  Admission June 1 through October 31 is $10 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID.  For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit
