Amherst Saxophone Quartet to perform at the Clark October 14

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (October 6, 2000) – The Amherst Saxophone Quartet will present a program ranging from Bach to blues on Saturday, October 14, at 8:00 p.m. at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The quartet, devoted to promoting the saxophone and its versatility, will perform Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II," Quatuor (1931) by Alexander Glazunov, Quatuor (1964) by Alfred Desenclos, "Full English Breakfast" by Mike Mower, and "All Right Blues" by Russ Carere. Tickets are $17 ($15 for members and students) and are available at the Clark Museum Shop or by calling 413-458-2303, extension 324.
Ensemble members are Russ Carere, alto sax, Stephen Rosenthal, tenor sax, Harry Fackelman, baritone sax, and Susan Fancher, soprano sax. The Amherst Saxophone Quartet is now celebrating its twenty-third season of concert performances. Highlights include appearances in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center, and broadcasts on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," NBC's "The Tonight Show," and "CBS Sunday Morning." A Time magazine review of their CD Bach on Sax stated, "Purists, beware! Your prejudice against unorthodox instrumentation could be shattered." The Amherst Saxophone Quartet will also present a free program for children and students at the Clark at 2:00 p.m. on October 14. The educational demonstration will provide an introduction to the saxophone.
The Amherst Saxophone Quartet concert is one of several chamber music concerts presented at the Clark this
season. On Sunday, December 9, at 8:00 p.m., the early music ensemble Calliope will perform a holiday concert. Tickets for Calliope are now on sale to members of the Clark; tickets go on sale to the general public on November 1. Other upcoming concerts will feature the Walden Chamber Players on February 11 and Musicians from Marlboro on May 1.
