For Immediate Release
September 21, 2006
The recently acquired pencil drawing entitled Group of Sculptures in the Atelier of Raymond Duchamp-Villon by Jacques Villon is the subject of the next Looking at Lunchtime Talk at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. On Thursday, October 12 at 12:30 pm, James Ganz, curator of prints, drawings, and photographs, will discuss this work and its history during a half hour gallery talk. This acquisition, along with 11 other recently donated works, is part of Works on Paper: A Selection of Recent Gifts on view Saturday, September 23 through January 7, 2007.Talks are free with gallery admission.
Works on Paper: A Selection of Recent Gifts includes works from the 16th to 20th centuries highlighting the Clark’s ever-expanding collection of prints, drawings, and photographs. The Group of Sculptures in the Atelier of Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1923) is one of three new acquisitions by Jacques Villon, the oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists. The other two acquisitions of works by Villon are a monotype in color entitled Bust of Baudelaire (1942), and a pen and ink drawing also entitled Bust of Baudelaire (1949). These three works join Villon’s earlier avant-garde etching of his brother Raymond’s sculpted Bust of Baudelaire (1920), purchased by the Clark in 1962.
Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café, bring a bag lunch, or picnic on the grounds of the Clark before or after the gallery talk.
Other new acquisitions featured in upcoming Looking at Lunchtime talks, held the second Thursday of the month September through December, include A Pond in the Forest by Constant Troyon on November 9 and The Annunciation by Luca Cambiaso on December 14.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August).
