For Immediate Release
September 05, 2007
John Constable’s magnificent oil studies, part of a recent gift to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute from the Manton Foundation, will be the subject of the next Looking at Lunchtime Talk at the Clark. On Thursday, September 13 at 12:30 pm, Michael Cassin, curator of education, will focus on Constable’s works. This half hour gallery talk is free with admission.
The Manton Collection includes a number of spectacular drawings, watercolors, and oil studies by John Constable, whose work celebrates the rural beauty of the English countryside. With Cassin as your guide, go for a stroll through Constable country, with stops at Salisbury Cathedral, Willy Lott's cottage and Brighton Beach.
Gainsborough, Constable, and Turner: The Manton Collection will offer highlights from the recent gift of this magnificent collection from the Manton Foundation. The Manton Collection, one of the greatest collections of British art assembled in the past fifty years, includes John Constable’s contemplative views of the English countryside and strikingly naturalistic oil studies; J.M.W. Turner’s turbulent, quasi-abstract seascapes; Thomas Gainsborough’s rigorous chalk drawings; and Thomas Rowlandson’s humorous watercolors caricaturing British life. With over 200 works of art, the Manton Collection also features works by Thomas Girtin, Richard Parkes Bonington, Samuel Palmer, John Martin, and William Blake.
Looking at Lunchtime gallery talks continue on Thursday, October 11 with Kathleen Morris, the Clark’s director of exhibitions and collections and curator of decorative arts, discussing eighteenth-century English silver. The talks take place at 12:30 pm on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard café or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.
The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, MA. The galleries are open daily July 1 through September 16, 10 am to 5 pm (closed Mondays September 17 through June 30). Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and under, members, and students with valid ID. Admission is free November through May.
