Notes:
Sargent painted this engaging portrait of his teacher, the French artist Carolus-Duran, in Paris. The painting drew substantial acclaim when it was exhibited in France at the Salon and over the next few years when it was shown both in England and America. Sargent represents Carolus-Duran with a sophisticated nonchalance in a freely brushed style, elements which would become hallmarks of his mature society portraits.
