October - October 1999

Willibald Sauerländer's book, Gothic Sculpture in France 1140-1270, is widely considered to be among the most seminal contributions in art history of that period.  Two of Germany's most distinguished art historians, Willibald and Birgit Sauerländer gave a compelling Clark Seminar on "The History of Art in Germany After the 'Intellectual Disaster.'"  As a Clark Fellow, Sauerländer worked on a number of projects, including his forthcoming book, The Duchenne de Boulogne, or, the Passion Photographed.
