Cécile Whiting

September - June 2003

Cécile Whiting, professor of art history at the University of California, Los Angeles, will develop her current book project, Pop Art: Outside Manhattan, Inside L.A., an exploration of how pop artists residing in Los Angeles during the 1960s represented the city and contributed to its urban identity.  Like her previous two books, Antifascism in American Art (Yale University Press, 1989) and A Taste for Pop:  Pop Art, Gender, and Consumer Culture (Cambridge University Press, 1997), this new study is a product of her interest in twentieth-century American art and politics and debates about the relationships between mass culture and high art.
