"Reimagining Museums for New Art"

Co-sponsored with MASS MoCA, this symposium on September 27, 1997, included a panel discussed on the question, “What is the ideal contemporary art museum for the twenty-first century?” It was moderated by Steve Lavine, president of the California Institute for the Arts. Participants included artist Rirkrit Tiravanija; Thelma Golden, curator and branch director of the Whitney Museum; Sally Jo Fifer, director of the Bay Area Video Coalition; Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, professor of performance studies at the Tisch School of the Arts; Britta Schmitz, chief curator of the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; and Declan McGonagle, director of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
