Mary Roberts is the John Schaeffer Associate Professor of British Art at the University of Sydney. A specialist in nineteenth-century British art, she focuses on gender and Orientalism, Ottoman art, and European cultural exchange. She is the author of Intimate Outsiders: The Harem in Ottoman and Orientalist Art and Travel Literature (Durham, 2007) and has co-edited three books: Edges of Empire: Orientalism and Visual Culture (Oxford, 2005); Orientalism’s Interlocutors: Painting, Architecture, Photography (Durham, 2002); and Refracting Vision: Essays on the Writings of Michael Fried (Sydney, 2000). Her Clark/Oakley project focuses on the artistic exchanges between Ottoman and Orientalist artists in nineteenth-century Istanbul.
