Ivan Gaskell

Ivan Gaskell, Margaret S. Winthrop Curator of Paintings, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts at Harvard, undertook a case study of the reception, interpretation, study, presentation, and reproduction of Johannes Vermeer's Woman Standing at a Virginal (National Gallery, London) during a summer-long Clark Fellowship. He has published widely in and on Vermeer studies and on the work of other seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish artists. Gaskell's interest in the theoretical ramifications of Johannes Vermeer's art is related to his concerns as joint general editor of Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and the Arts. He has published on Vermeer in The Burlington Magazine and elsewhere. He is currently editing the proceedings of two symposia on Vermeer held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Mauritshuis, The Hague, during the recent exhibition.
