GIULIO CESARE COMES TO THE CLARK IN HD

Williamstown, Massachusetts—The popular Met: Live in HD series continues at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Saturday, April 27 at 12 pm with a dynamic staging of Giulio Cesare, David McVicar’s second new production of the season. The opera incorporates elements of Baroque theater and nineteenth-century British imperialism to illuminate themes of love, war, and empire building. David Daniels stars as the title character, opposite Natalie Dessay in her Met role debut as the bewitching Cleopatra, Alice Coote as Sesto, Patricia Bardon as Cornelia, Christophe Dumaux as Tolomeo, and Guido Loconsolo in his Met debut as Achilla.

“Giulio Cesare is a kaleidoscope of an opera—a semi-comic, semi-tragic adventure story,” McVicar says. “You get romance, you get drama, you get moments of political wheeling-and-dealing, complex family relationships—as well as real emotion and tragedy.”

The New York Times praised conductor Harry Bicket for “a lithe, lyrical and stylish performance of this great score from the Met orchestra.”

Approximate running time is 245 minutes.
