THE CLARK'S MICHAEL CASSIN TO LECTURE AT THE ALBANY INSTITUTE OF HISTORY AND ART

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—On Thursday, August 22 at 5:30 pm, Michael Cassin, director of the Center for Education in the Visual Arts at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, will present the lecture “The Wide Frontier: American Landscape Painting in the Nineteenth Century.” The free lecture will be held at the Albany Institute of History and Art, located at 125 Western Avenue in Albany, New York. Cassin will provide an overview of the history and changes in American landscape painting during the course of the nineteenth century, a time of unprecedented turmoil and growth in the nation’s history. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the annexation of Hawaii in 1896, the possibilities for American landscape painters became virtually limitless. In particular, Cassin will highlight the work of Winslow Homer, Frederic Church, Albert Bierdstadt, and the Hudson River School.

“I’m particularly looking forward to this talk, as nineteenth-century American landscape painting is so well represented in the Albany Institute’s collection, and the Clark’s summer exhibitions celebrate the work of two of America’s greatest landscape painters—Winslow Homer and George Inness,” Cassin said.
