WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute welcomes the fifth season of National Theatre Live broadcasts, offering a rich array of London’s best productions, ranging from classic to contemporary. Othello

Othello, newly married to Desdemona who is half his age, is appointed leader of a military operation to defend Cyprus from the Turks. Iago, his ensign, passed over for promotion in favor of young Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Adrian Lester, last seen at the National as Henry V, takes the title role, playing opposite Rory Kinnear (Iago), whose recent appearances at the National include Hamlet and The Last of the Haussmans.

Macbeth

National Theatre Live broadcasts Manchester International Festival’s electrifying production of Macbeth, with Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn, Hamlet) in his first Shakespeare performance in over a decade as the Scottish King and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who, ER) as Lady Macbeth. Directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh.

National Theatre: Fifty Years on Stage

To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the National Theatre presents a thrilling evening of live theatre, directed by Nicolas Hytner. The celebration includes rare glimpses from the archive, featuring many of the original actors who have performed on the National’s stages over the past five decades.

The Habit of Art

December 12, 2013 at 2 pm
Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W.H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first in twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Alan Bennett’s play reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

Coriolanus

January 30, 2014 at 2 pm

National Theatre Live broadcasts the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, with Tom Hiddleston in the title role and Mark Gatiss as Menenius. Directed by Josie Rourke.

About the Clark

Set amidst 140 acres in the Berkshires, the Clark is one of the few major art museums that also serves as a leading international center for research and scholarship. The Clark presents public and education programs and organizes groundbreaking exhibitions that advance new scholarship.
