CLARK TO BROADCAST MET PRODUCTION OF PARSIFAL IN HD

Williamstown, MA—On Saturday, March 2 at 12 pm, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s Met: Live in HD series continues with a broadcast of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, conducted by Daniele Gatti and directed by noted film and opera director François Girard in his Met debut. Tickets are $25 ($22 members; $18 students) and may be ordered online or by calling 413 458 0MET (458 0638).

The opera tells the story of the Knights of the Holy Grail and ailing King Amfortas, who suffers from a wound prophesied to be curable only by an innocent youth—Parsifal, who must overcome tremendous obstacles in his quest to save the brotherhood of the Grail.

“Parsifal is not just an opera—it’s a mission,” Girard says. “At the end of his life, Wagner was trying to reconcile all the aspects of his spirituality. It’s a sacred piece in the history of music.”

Jonas Kaufmann stars as the title character. The cast also features Katarina Dalayman as Kundry, the mystical woman who tempts Parsifal; Peter Mattei as Amfortas, king of the Knights of the Holy Grail; René Pape in one of his greatest roles, the wise old knight Gurnemanz; and Evgeny Nikitin as the magician Klingsor.

Approximate running time is 320 minutes.
