THE CLARK TO SCREEN 1994 FILM LITTLE WOMEN
For Immediate Release
July 02, 2013
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s “Homericana” summer film series, which spotlights films set in Winslow Homer’s America, continues on Monday, July 15 with a free screening of Gillian Anderson’s 1994 film Little Women. The film will be shown at 3 pm in the Clark’s auditorium.
The film, which is adapted from Louisa May Alcott’s 1869 novel, follows the trials and tribulations of the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, as they come of age during the American Civil War. Faced with rationing, a restricted income, and the absence of their father, who is serving in the Army, the girls must simultaneously find their place in the world while supporting each other. Alcott drew inspiration from her own childhood in Concord, Massachusetts when she was writing the novel, which made an immediate—and enduring—connection with readers of all ages.
This Oscar-nominated adaptation is notable for its talented cast, including Winona Ryder as Jo March, Susan Sarandon as matriarch Mrs. March, Christian Bale as the March’s neighbor Mr. “Laurie” Lawrence, and a twelve-year-old Kirsten Dunst as Amy March.
