DIRECTOR OF SHELBURNE MUSEUM TO LECTURE AT THE CLARK

For Immediate Release

July 25, 2013

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Thomas Denenberg, director of the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, delivers a free lecture at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Sunday, August 4 at 3 pm. The talk, entitled Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Place, is the third in a series of lectures that focus on the relationship between artists and the locations they depict in their art. Denenberg’s lecture will examine Winslow Homer’s long relationship with the community of Prout’s Neck, Maine.
This vacation spot on Maine’s famously rugged coast served as Homer’s inspiration and home for the final decades of his life. It was there that he created some of his most iconic paintings, including Saco Bay, Summer Squall, and West Point, Prout’s Neck. As such, understanding the location and Homer’s relationship to it can in turn help reveal new insights about the paintings themselves.

Prior to being named director of the Shelburne Museum, Denenberg served as deputy director and chief curator of the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine. While at the Portland Museum of Art, Denenberg curated an exhibition of Homer’s works, and has published two monographs on Homer: Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Place (2010) and Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine (2012). Denenberg completed his Ph.D. in American and New England Studies at Boston University.
