FUNK IN THE TRUNK TO SPICE UP THE CLARK'S SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Bennington, Vermont-based band Funk in the Trunk will perform on Tuesday, July 16 at 6 pm at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as part of the Clark’s free outdoor concert series. The band performs Motown, soul, and funk from the ’60s and ’70s.

The band has been together since 2012, when singer/keyboardist Nicki Skipper and guitarist John Carson discovered a shared interest in starting a funk and soul band. With the addition of drummer Nathan Meunier and bass player Joe Wiley, Funk in the Trunk was born. Backup singers Kim Turner, Linda Allard, and Kiah Morris joined shortly thereafter.

The band’s hard work and energy is starting to pay off. The Bennington Banner recently named the group “Best Local Band” in their 2013 Reader’s Choice poll.

The group’s set list includes a variety of funk classics, including Wild Cherry’s “Play that Funky Music White Boy,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” and The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno,” but Skipper stresses that the set list is always evolving. “We like to introduce one or two new songs at each show,” she said.

There is a twenty-year difference between the oldest and youngest members of the band, and the group represents a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. At its core, Skipper said, Funk in the Trunk is about “all kinds of people coming together and making a joyful, funky noise. You bring your dancing shoes, we’ll bring the party.”

In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the auditorium.

About the Clark
