FREE OUTDOOR SERIES AT THE CLARK

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—Red June will inaugurate the Clark’s 2013 outdoor concert series on Tuesday, July 2 with their well-honed blend of bluegrass, country, and American roots music. The trio will begin their free concert at 6 pm on the Clark’s south lawn.

Red June hails from Asheville, North Carolina, a city in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains with a thriving traditional music scene. Among hundreds of local groups, Red June has distinguished itself with a winning blend of crisp vocal harmonies and evocative songwriting. While the band’s three-part harmonies evoke the lush vocal sounds that traditional bluegrass is famous for, the group performs mostly original material—a rarity in a genre with such a rich songbook. Their second album, Beauty Will Come (2012), has attracted national attention. Guitarist and lead songwriter John Cloyd Miller recently won the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest prize at MerleFest 2013. Miller submitted Red June’s song “Cloud of Dust,” a contemplative mid-tempo number about the changes in the rural United States during the Dust Bowl.

Dobro player Will Straughan and violinist Natalya Weinstein, originally from Amherst, Massachusetts, round out the group. Both are songwriters, and Weinstein in has won acclaim from her peers for her rhythmically intense approach to traditional fiddle playing.

Barbecued fare will be available for purchase, or concertgoers may bring a picnic dinner. The Clark’s galleries will be open until 6 pm; current exhibitions include Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History and George Inness: Gifts from Frank and Katherine Martucci.

Admission is $15 June 1 through October 31; free November through May; and free year-round for Clark members, children 18 and younger, and students with valid ID.
