'GREAT ART ON FILM' SERIES OPENS AT THE CLARK WITH MANET: PORTRAYING LIFE

Williamstown, MA—The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will air a film documenting an important exhibition on view at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, Manet: Portraying Life, on Sunday, June 2 at 3 pm. Richard Rand, Robert and Martha Berman Lipp Senior Curator/Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Clark, will provide an introduction to the film and host questions and answers following. This is the first major exhibition in the UK devoted to the portraiture of Edouard Manet, spanning his entire career. The eagerly awaited exhibition brings together great works from across Europe, Asia, and the United States. Cinemagoers will see exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of the Royal Academy's exhibition preparation—moments usually hidden from view—and experience a detailed, superbly crafted biography of Manet and nineteenth-century Paris.

The three-part “Great Art on Film” series, which is broadcast to cinema screens worldwide, continues on August 11 with Edvard Munch 150, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth. The screening is co-hosted by the National Museum and the Munch Museum, both in Oslo. The final screening on October 20, Vermeer and Music—The Art of Love and Leisure, takes place at the National Gallery in London, where audiences will see a unique perspective on the masterpieces of Johannes Vermeer. Each event screening, narrated by art historian Tim Marlow, ventures beyond the gallery with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.
