Cassin’s Talk Follows Film

Williamstown, MA—On Saturday, March 14, following the 7:15 pm showing of the film Mr. Turner at Images Cinema, Michael Cassin, director of the Center for Education in the Visual Arts at the Clark Art Institute, takes the stage to discuss the life and work of English Romantic landscape painter J.M.W. Turner.

While the film concentrates on the artist’s later years, Cassin provides insights into Turner’s youth in London; his education as a painter; his interest in artists of earlier generations, in scientific progress, and in the technology of the modern world; and his lifelong passion for the dramatic power and grandeur of nature. In addition, Cassin talks about some of Turner’s works in the Clark’s collection, particularly the well-known painting Rockets and Blue Lights (Close at Hand) to Warn Steamboats of Shoal Water, which was recently reinstalled in the Clark’s newly refurbished permanent collection galleries.

The latest film from acclaimed British director Mike Leigh, Mr. Turner stars Timothy Spall, who won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014. The film screens at Images Friday, March 13 through Thursday, March 19. Rated R; run time 2 hours 29 minutes. Images Cinema is located at 50 Spring Street, Williamstown. ABOUT THE CLARK

The Clark Art Institute is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts. Opened in 1955, the Clark houses exceptional European and American paintings and sculpture, extensive collections of master prints and drawings, English silver, and early photography. The Clark opened its expanded facilities on July 4, 2014, unveiling new and enhanced spaces that accommodate the continued growth of the Institute’s programs. Included in this final stage of the project are the new 42,600-square-foot Clark Center designed by Tadao Ando Architect & Associates, expansion and renovation of the original Museum Building and the ongoing renovation of the Manton Research Center by Selldorf Architects, and a sweeping redesign of the grounds by Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architecture. The first phase of the campus expansion project was completed in 2008 with the opening of the Lunder Center at Stone Hill, a striking conservation and exhibitions facility also designed by Tadao Ando.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
