FREE LECTURE AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE EXPLORES VENETIAN PAINTER TITIAN

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Clark Fellow Stephen J. Campbell presents, “Against Titian” on Tuesday, April 19 at 5:30 pm. The free lecture will be held in the Michael Conforti Pavilion at the Clark Center.

Campbell presents part of a work in progress on the geography of art in sixteenth-century Italy, focusing on the conflicted reception of the work of the great Venetian painter Titian outside of his home city. He also contrasts Titian’s production for destinations outside Italy—where he performs as the quintessential artist of the Italian modern manner—with a very different “Italian” or “Venetian” Titian.

Stephen J. Campbell is Professor in History of Art at Johns Hopkins University. A central concern of his work is the historical investigation of “style” and its role in visual communication, as well as questions of canon formation and the geography of art. His most recent book Art in Italy 1400–1600, co-authored with Michael Cole, will soon appear in Japanese and Italian editions. At the Clark, Campbell is developing a project on Andrea Mantegna, exploring the depiction of art objects and simulation of artistic media in the artist’s work.
