CLARK ART INSTITUTE PRESENTS OPENING LECTURE ‘CREATING SENSING PLACE’

Talk Ushers in Sensing Place: Reflecting on Stone Hill

Williamstown, MA—Join curators Mark C. Taylor, Professor of Religion, Columbia University, and Henry W. Art, Robert F. Rosenburg Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies at Williams College, at the Clark Art Institute on Sunday, July 10 at 3 pm for the lecture “Creating Sensing Place.” The lecture will be held in Hunter Studio at the Lunder Center at Stone Hill. Sensing Place: Reflecting on Stone Hill is on view July 4–October 10, 2016.

Taylor and Art discuss the abiding importance of place at the moment it is disappearing in an era of globalization, urbanization, virtualization, and digitization. Sensing Place asks visitors to reflect on the meaning and value of place through a consideration of the rich natural and cultural history of Stone Hill—a prominent geological formation at the heart of the Clark’s campus—from its geological formation to the present. Artists, writers, philosophers, scientists, and naturalists familiar with this special place examine broader concepts of place through objects linked to Stone Hill, including historic maps, photographs, and artifacts.

ABOUT THE CLARK
The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts. Opened in 1955, the Clark houses exceptional European and American paintings and sculpture, extensive collections of master prints and drawings, English silver, and early photography.
