CLARK ART INSTITUTE’S ‘LOOKING AT LUNCHTIME’ EXPLORES ALMA-TADEMA PIANO

For Immediate Release
January 6, 2016

Williamstown, Massachusetts—The Clark Art Institute welcomes the public to join Curatorial Research Associate Alexis Goodin for a half-hour “Looking at Lunchtime” gallery talk on Tuesday, January 19 at 12:30 pm in Clark Center special exhibition galleries. Goodin will discuss Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s Model D Pianoforte and Pair of Stools, which is currently on view as part of the exhibition An Eye for Excellence: Twenty Years of Collecting.

When the elaborate case of this Steinway piano was displayed in London in 1885, the press called it “splendid,” “remarkable,” and “superb.” Alma-Tadema designed it as the centerpiece of a music room in the Manhattan mansion of financier Henry Marquand. With its lavish materials and decorative flourishes—including the names of Apollo and the Muses inlaid on the lid—it remains one of the grandest grand pianos ever made. The Clark acquired the piano in 1997.

Looking at Lunchtime talks are free with paid admission.
