‘LOOKING AT LUNCHTIME’ GALLERY TALK AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE EXPLORES NYMPHS AND SATYRS

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Williams College art professor Guy Hedreen leads “Looking at Lunchtime,” a half-hour gallery talk, at the Clark Art Institute on Wednesday, September 21 at 12:30 pm. The talk takes place in the special exhibition galleries in the Clark Center and is free with admission.

Among the earliest types of nude in western art is the nymph—the “presence” or power of a spring, pond, tree, or mountain, envisioned as a young woman not yet tied down by marriage or family. Her frequent companion and would-be lover, the satyr, embodies a primordial relationship between nature and culture, animal and human, long ago left behind by the advance of civilization, and surviving to this day primarily in art. In this talk, Hedreen explores aspects of nature, gender, and sexuality in several pictures of these demigods in the exhibition Splendor, Myth, and Vision: Nudes from the Prado.

ABOUT THE CLARK
