CLARK ART INSTITUTE TO AIR METROPOLITAN OPERA’S ‘DIE ZAUBERFLOTE’ (THE MAGIC FLUTE)

Williamstown, Massachusetts—The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), recorded live, airs in HD at the Clark Art Institute on Saturday, October 14 at 12:55 pm. Met Music Director Emeritus James Levine conducts Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s masterpiece—the Met’s first full-length production of the opera. Golda Schultz sings Pamina with Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, Charles Castronovo as the prince Tamino, Markus Werba as Papageno, Christian Van Horn as Sprecher, and René Pape as Sarastro.

In a mythical land between the sun and the moon, three ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night save Prince Tamino from a serpent. When they leave to tell the queen, the birdcatcher Papageno appears, boasting that it was he who killed the creature. The ladies return to give Tamino a portrait of the queen’s daughter, Pamina, who has been enslaved by the evil Sarastro. Tamino immediately falls in love with the girl’s picture. The queen, appearing in a burst of thunder, commands Tamino to rescue her. The ladies give a magic flute to Tamino and silver bells to Papageno to ensure their safety and appoint three spirits to guide them. The ensuing journey involves tragedy and heartbreak, but courage, virtue, and wisdom prevail.

Now in its twelfth season, The Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series of live performances transmitted to theaters in seventy countries around the world. Live telecasts feature the full performance along with backstage interviews and commentary.

The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts.
