FREE LECTURE AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE EXAMINES MEDIEVAL PICTORIAL LEGENDS

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Ivan Gerát, a fellow at the Clark Art Institute, presents the free lecture “Image, Narrative, and Mentality: Recent Perspectives in Approaching Medieval Pictorial Legends” on Tuesday, March 14 at 5:30 pm. The lecture will be held in the Michael Conforti Pavilion.
The role of narratives in creative artistic processes and their influence on the historical functions of images open many fascinating questions in art history and related disciplines. This lecture presents several case studies, illustrating the attempts to achieve a new theoretical understanding of pictorial legends, taking into account the cutting-edge methodological discussions as well as close reading of relevant historical sources.
Ivan Gerát is director at the Institute for Art History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava and associate professor at the University of Trnava. His last book Legendary Scenes: An Essay on Medieval Pictorial Hagiography was published in 2013. His current research focuses on the broad cultural contexts of images in the Late Middle Ages, philosophical problems of image interpretation, and the historiography of art in the Central Europe.
