‘LOOKING AND LUNCHING’ AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE EXAMINES BOLDINI PAINTING

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Looking and Lunching, a program at the Clark Art Institute dedicated to focused investigation and friendly discussion with fellow art lovers, will be held Thursday, April 20 at 12 pm in the permanent collection galleries. In this installment, “Spanish Daydreams,” Terrence Washington, MA candidate in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, examines Italian artist Giovanni Boldini’s imaginative Spanish genre painting, Guitar Player.

Boldini painted Guitar Player in 1872, long before he visited Spain. By using props and costumes, he created a flirtatious encounter between a man dressed as a toreador and a woman in a lace mantilla strumming a guitar. Such light-hearted Spanish subjects became popular in France during the 1860s and 1870s. This painting was among the first Boldini sold after he moved from Italy to Paris.

ABOUT THE CLARK
