‘PICASSO IN FILM’ SERIES CONTINUES AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE WITH 'MIDNIGHT IN PARIS'

Williamstown, Massachusetts—When Midnight in Paris was released in 2011, The New York Times called it “charming” and “marvelously romantic.” In the third installment of the Clark Art Institute’s free “Picasso in Film” series, Midnight in Paris will be shown Monday, August 14 at 7 pm in the auditorium, located in the Clark’s Manton Research Center. The film is rated PG-13; run time is 1 hour, 34 minutes. The film series is held in conjunction with the Clark’s exhibition Picasso: Encounters, on view through August 27, 2017.

Woody Allen directs the story of Gil Pender (Owen Wilson), a successful Hollywood screenwriter constructing his first novel as he vacations in Paris with his fiancé Inez (Rachel McAdams). Struggling to find inspiration, Gil begins midnight walks through the city and finds himself physically transported to the roaring twenties, where he meets Jean Cocteau, Cole Porter, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates), and Pablo Picasso. As he delves further into his fantasy and returns to the 1920s night after night, Gil becomes involved with Picasso’s lover Adriana (Marion Cotillard), straining his relationship with Inez in the modern era. Wandering Paris by day, he finds remnants of his rendezvous—a Cole Porter gramophone record and Adriana’s diary. The further Gil delves into the 1920s, the more complicated his life becomes. Gil encounters not only Picasso, but also Man Ray, Henri Matisse, Salvadore Dali, and Toulouse-Lautrec, among others.

The “Picasso in Film” series concludes on Monday, August 21 with Neruda.
