ANNUAL BERKSHIRE LANTERN WALK SCHEDULED AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Step out into the summer night for a magical experience at the annual Berkshire Lantern Walk, held on the grounds of the Clark Art Institute on Thursday, August 9 at 8:30 pm. The walk is free and is open to all ages. In preparation for the walk, two lantern-making community workshops will be held: one on Wednesday, August 8 and one on Thursday, August 9. Details are below.

Schedule of events

Wednesday, August 8:
1–4 pm: In this free community workshop, join artists from the New England Puppet Intensive to create an illuminated sculpture in preparation for Thursday’s Lantern Walk. All materials provided.

Thursday, August 9:
5–9 pm: Visit the special exhibition Jennifer Steinkamp: Blind Eye. Admission is free for these four hours only!

5–9 pm: Enjoy refreshments available for purchase at the Café at Stone Hill, including salads, sandwiches, snacks, beer and wine.

5–9 pm: Make a simple paper lantern on the Lunder Center terrace before the walk starts (or bring your own). Free; all materials provided.

7–8:30 pm: Explore the lantern garden created by the New England Puppet Intensive. Families with small children are encouraged to explore the Clark trails by twilight.

8:30 pm: Gather at the Lunder Center at Stone Hill, then join in a procession along the Pasture Trail to the contemporary installation Thomas Schütte: Crystal. Along the way, local musicians provide an improvised score as members of the New England Puppet Intensive present a hillside performance with abstract, illuminated objects inspired by Jennifer Steinkamp: Blind Eye.

The Berkshire Lantern Walk is an ongoing collaboration between the Clark Art Institute and the New England Puppet Intensive. This program is supported by a grant from the Fund for Williamstown, a fund of Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation; the Massachusetts Cultural Council; and the Cultural Council of Northern Berkshire, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

ABOUT THE CLARK
The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts. Opened in 1955, the Clark houses exceptional European and American paintings and sculpture, extensive collections of master prints and drawings, English silver, and early photography. Acting as convener through its Research and Academic Program, the Clark gathers an international community of scholars to participate in a lively program of conferences, colloquia, and workshops on topics of vital importance to the visual arts. The Clark, which has a three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide, is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; open daily in July and August. Admission is $20; free year-round for Clark members, children 18 and younger, and students with valid ID.
