CLARK ART INSTITUTE FELLOW TO LECTURE ON ‘SECRET LIFE OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE’

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Beatriz Colomina, Holly Fellow at the Clark Art Institute, presents the free lecture, “The Secret Life of Modern Architecture or We Don't Need Another Hero” on Tuesday, September 11 at 5:30 pm. The lecture will be held in the Clark’s auditorium, located in the Manton Research Center.

The secrets of modern architecture, Colomina asserts, are like those of a family. Women are the ghosts of modern architecture—everywhere present and crucial, but strangely invisible. But it is not just a question of adding a few names, or even hundreds, to the history of architecture. Instead it is opening the field to its own productive complexity.

Beatriz Colomina is professor of architecture and director of the media and modernity program at Princeton University. Her books include Are We Human? Notes on an Archeology of Design (Lars Muller, 2016), The Century of the Bed (Moderne Kunst Nürnberg, 2015), Manifesto Architecture: The Ghost of Mies (Sternberg Press, 2014), Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X-197X (Actar, 2011), Domesticity at War (The MIT Press, 2007), Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (The MIT Press, 1994), and Sexuality and Space (Princeton Architectural Press, 1992). She has curated the exhibitions Clip/Stamp/Fold (2006), Playboy Architecture (2012) and Radical Pedagogies (2014) and the Istanbul Design Biennial (2016). At the Clark she will be working on the question of collaboration.

The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts. Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; open daily in July and August. Admission is $20; free year-round for Clark members, children 18 and younger, and students with valid ID.
