CLARK ART INSTITUTE ADDS SECOND PRESENTATION OF THE MET: LIVE IN HD PRODUCTION  OF tERENCE bLANCHARD’S FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES

 Production is the first opera by a Black composer presented on the Metropolitan Opera’s stage.

Williamstown, Massachusetts—In response to popular demand, the Clark Art Institute will add a second screening of The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Fire Shut Up in My Bones to its schedule for The Met: Live in HD. The additional presentation will air on Saturday, November 13, at 12:55 pm. The Clark’s initial airing of the production on October 30 is sold-out. The award-winning series of high-definition cinema simulcasts features the full live performance along with backstage interviews and commentary.

Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir. The production marks a significant moment in the Metropolitan Opera’s history as it is the first opera by a Black composer presented on the Metropolitan’s stage. Featuring a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the opera tells a poignant and profound story about a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown—two of the creators of the Metropolitan’s recent production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess—co-direct this new staging. Baritone Will Liverman, one of opera’s most exciting young artists, stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie.

Seating capacity in the Clark’s auditorium has been reduced for this season to accommodate greater social distancing. Tickets are limited to 100 guests and are selling quickly. Proof of COVID vaccination for all visitors age twelve and older is required. All guests age five and older are required to wear facemasks at all times while inside the Clark’s facilities. 

The next Met: Live in HD performance is Eurydice, airing Saturday, December 4 at 12:55pm.

The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts.
