Annunciation
c. 1520
In sixteenth-century religious paintings, clear storytelling was highly valued. This devotional image illustrates the Annunciation in a traditional format. The archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she has been chosen as the mother of Jesus. His words—“Greetings most favored one! The Lord is with you”—are inscribed on his scroll in Latin. The Holy Spirit descends on Mary in the form of a dove, symbolizing the mystical event.
