Bowl of Roses on a Marble Table

1885

During his first visit to England in 1859, Fantin-Latour met Edwin and Elizabeth Edwards, who championed his work and encouraged the production of his flower paintings. The composition of this still life, which once belonged to the couple, is subtly dynamic—the angle of the marble-topped table and the position of the red rose on the left lead our eyes into the picture space.
