Laundresses in a Landscape

1760

In a lush forest, a small cascade runs into a placid river. One of two young laundresses working by the riverbank has spotted a boy peeping at them playfully from behind a tree. Boucher often used figures like these in his idealized landscapes to add touches of color—like the laundress's red skirt—and to suggest a lighthearted narrative.
