Peaches and Grapes

Henri Fantin-Latour

French, 1836–1904

Peaches and Grapes

1894

Fantin-Latour’s still lifes were extremely popular in England, but they met with little critical success in his native France. Frustrated by this lack of appreciation, he produced fewer still lifes in the late 1800s, and those he did paint were done more for pleasure than for sale. This image, which conveys the shine on the grapes and the soft texture and full curves of ripe peaches, demonstrates the painter’s remarkable technical skill.
