Charles-François Daubigny
French, 1817–1878
The Bridge between Persan and Beaumont-sur-Oise
1867
In Daubigny’s view of Beaumont, a town north of Paris, the thirteenth-century church tower rises above a cluster of buildings. A low stone bridge links Beaumont to the more industrial town of Persan on the opposite bank of the River Oise, but the artist has deliberately omitted any sign of modernity. Instead, the two figures watching over a line of geese in the foreground give the scene a pastoral quality.
