This handsomely produced picture book accompanies the opening of Stone Hill Center at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Designed by the renowned Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, Stone Hill Center provides galleries and public spaces for the Clark, as well as new facilities for the Williamstown Art Conservation Center. This is Ando’s first museum project set within a rural American landscape.

A master of minimalism, Ando is known for his use of simple materials, his light-filled interiors, and his respect for the natural environment in which he works. In Stone Hill Center: Tadao Ando at the Clark, the celebrated photographer Richard Pare captures Ando at his best—the play of light across the cedar entry, shimmering woodlands reflected in the large gallery windows, lush meadow grasses juxtaposed with sharply angled walls. An essay by noted author Michael Webb provides context for the Clark building, tracing Ando’s career from his early work in Japan to his iconic Church of the Light in Osaka (1989) to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (2002), fully exploring Ando’s expression of architecture as art form.
