Amerapoora, Gautama's Shrine
1855
This photograph depicts a Buddhist shrine at Amerapura (then the capital city of Burma and now a township of Mandalay City, in present-day Myanmar). Captain Linnaeus Tripe made this photograph in 1855, during his first commission for the Government of India. Tripe was the official photographer on a diplomatic mission to obtain Burmese King Mindon’s recognition of British annexation of territory following the Anglo-Burmese War of 1852. Tripe’s role on this expedition was to gather military intelligence, documenting mineral resources, topography, and religious customs. Tripe published 120 photographs from the journey, including this one, in the album Burma Views, which was paid for and distributed by the Government of India.
