Spanish, 1746–1828

Asensio Juliá

1814

Goya draws our attention to the sitter’s partly illuminated face with the dazzling white collar of his shirt, which peeks out from under a blue vest. The dark silhouette of his top hat is enlivened by a touch of red paint above the brim. He looks up from his work with a thoughtful expression, the charcoal holder in his hand hinting at his profession—he has been identified as the artist Asensio Juliá, Goya's friend and colleague.
