John Constable
English, 1776–1837
Dedham Vale from the Road to East Bergholt, Sunset
1810
This sketch is one of five made by Constable in preparation for his first large-scale oil painting of a Suffolk subject, Dedham Vale: Morning. In the final version, the cattle on the left, indistinct in this study, were painted in greater detail, and the man with the walking stick on the right was replaced by a woman. Oil sketches like this allowed Constable to experiment with viewpoint, composition, and a range of colors.
