Girard le Plemeu de Brères
1884
Girard le Plemeu de Brères, the character portrayed in this terracotta bust, appears in a number of traditional folktales from the French province of Berry, the artist’s homeland. A peasant from the region probably posed for the sculpture. The choice of subject and model may derive from Baffier’s belief that peasants—ennobled by the simplicity of their lives and their connection to the land—were the spiritual foundation of the French state.
