Pierre-Auguste Renoir
French, 1841–1919
Jacques Fray
1904
Jacques Fray was about one year old when Renoir painted this portrait. Characteristic of the artist’s late manner, touches of color were applied loosely to the canvas and combine into a softly focused image. The infant is shown clasping a toy bird, while another stands on the table and a third lies overturned beside it. As an adult, Fray became a concert pianist, working with George Gershwin and hosting one of the first classical music series on American radio.
