Nicaise
1738
This painting illustrates a fable by Jean de La Fontaine, in which a married woman agrees to meet her lover, Nicaise, in a secluded garden. When Nicaise goes in search of a rug to sit on, the woman reconsiders her decision and admonishes him on his return for wasting time. Lancret favored this type of complex, often moralizing narrative, involving fashionably dressed figures in pastoral settings.
