Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory

French, 1756–present

Vincent Taillandier, (French, active 1753–1790) or Mme. Geneviève Taillandier (née Le Roy), (French, active 1774–1798)

Plate from the service de la Reíne

1784

This plate may have been part of a dinner service commissioned by the French Queen Marie Antoinette. Before she received the set, however, her husband, Louis XVI, gave it to King Gustave III of Sweden. The queen immediately ordered a second service, decorated with the same delicate gilding and exquisitely painted flowers and pearls. Determining which set this plate came from is complicated by the fact that the same craftspeople at the manufactory worked on both sets.
