Constant Troyon

French, 1810–1865

Saint-Cloud

c. 1835

The figures in this painting are enjoying a pleasant stroll through the gardens of the Château de Saint-Cloud, a palace near Paris. Rather than emphasizing the site’s historic significance, Troyon focused on its picturesque quality in the soft afternoon light. Some of the artist’s earliest landscapes make use of this setting, perhaps because of his familiarity with the area—he began his career as a porcelain painter at the famous Sevrès factory a short distance away.
