Sample panel for the Marquand Music Room
c. 1884
This panel was made as a sample to demonstrate how the different materials—contrasting inlays of ivory, mother-of-pearl, and ebony—would look when set against a background of varnished cedar wood. The design was adapted to decorate footstools (now lost) belonging to a suite of furniture commissioned by the American businessman and collector, Henry Marquand. The Clark’s grand piano formed the centerpiece of that suite.
